Juniper berry (Juniperus communis)
The volatile oils found in juniper berry, particularly terpinen-4-ol have been used for hundreds of years for kidney conditions and urinary tract infection. Recent research has confirmed these uses. Juniper can increase urine volume without changing electrolyte levels which makes it valuable for reducing bacterial levels which cause urinary tract and kidney infection.
Parsley root (Petroselinum sativum)
Parsley root is effective for urinary tract infections and urinary tract gravel. Its diuretic action is primarily as a result of its irritating effect on kidney tissue. Parsley herb is a superior food medicine containing high levels of fiber, provitamin A carotenoids, vitamin C, folate and other antioxidants.
Uva Ursi leaf (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)
Uva Ursi, also known as bearberry, has been used as a treatment for chronic urinary tract and kidney infection. Two studies have validated its use and found activity against most major bacteria that cause urinary tract and kidney infection. Another study evaluated its use as a preventative against urinary tract infection with positive results.
Marshmallow root (Althea officinalis)
Although marshmallow shares its name of with marshmallow candy they are obviously not the same. Marshmallow root has been used traditionally to sooth mucous membranes such as those lining the urinary tract, which often becomes irritated or inflamed during infection.
Lobelia aerial parts (Lobelia inflata)
Early North American herbal Physicians from the turn-of-the-century considered lobelia to be one of the most important medicinal plants and it was used in many formulas for treating spasms in the urinary system. It is also used as an anodyne or pain reliever. Lobelia’s usefulness in this formula is for its reduction of spastic contraction in smooth muscle which is a common feature of urinary tract infection.
Ginger root (Zingiber officinale)
Ginger has powerful pain relieving properties. Ginger is also used traditionally as a carrier herb in many formulas; it carries the effect of the formula to its target organs, in this case the kidneys and bladder.
Goldenseal root (Hydrastis canadensis)
Goldenseal is also known as King of the mucous membranes and has antimicrobial and antibacterial effects on many kinds of bacteria which commonly cause urinary tract infection primarily due to the beneficial action of berberini.
Couchgrass rhizome (Agropyron repens)
The primary action of Couchgrass is on the urinary system. Couchgrass is a urinary demulcent, meaning that it softens and soothes damaged or inflamed surfaces. It also helps lessen the frequency and pain of urinary discharge.
